Planning for your Alaskan Adventure!

Packing for your Kenai fishing trip requires much more than waders and fishing line. Visitors coming to Alaska for the first time are often shocked at how truly diverse the weather can be.

In Alaska, it’s not unheard of to experience sun, heat, wind, rain and even freezing temperatures all in one day. Weather in Alaska is notoriously unpredictable. Summer temperatures in Alaska’s interior can peak at 100°F while less than 100 miles south in Denali National Park, the temperature might be a cool 50°F.

The average high for the Kenai Peninsula from June through August ranges from 57°F to 64°F while the lows range from 39°F to 49°F.  Average precipitation during those summer months ranges from 1.06 inches in June to 3.27 inches in September. The best insurance against bad weather is preparation.

Here are some items to add to your suitcase:

Hats:

When visiting Alaska, a hat can be one of the most important articles of clothing. Not only will a good hat help keep the sun out of your eyes as you fish the beautiful turquoise waters, but it can also help to prevent a “land of the midnight sun” sunburn. Hats are also extremely important to have in cold weather as you can lose a tremendous amount of heat from the head.

Pants and Shorts:

For the casual traveler, be sure to pack the most comfortable pants available. For travelers spending a great deal of time outdoors in the magnificent Alaska terrain: hikers, hunters and our fishermen, waterproof pants will help to keep you dry and comfortable. In addition, be sure to pack a pair of shorts. Alaska experiences some of the nicest weather anywhere – have a pair of shorts stowed in your backpack.

Shirts and Sweaters:

One of the most important things to consider when packing for your Kenai fishing trip is layering. Consider carrying a variety of different shirts on your adventure. Be sure to include everything from short and long sleeve tee shirts to heavy wool shirts. Polypropylene and fleece are also great to have when you are adventuring on the water.

Jackets:

An all-purpose insulated jacket and a breathable waterproof rain jacket will usually provide all the protection you need against the elements. For colder situations, a light jacket accompanied by a sweater will usually provide adequate protection from the weather. If you are planning on spending extended periods outdoors, a heavier weather-resistant jacket along with complete rain gear is essential.

Shoes and Boots:

When vacationing in Alaska, comfortable shoes are key – especially if walking or light hiking is part of your travel plan. For the average traveler, tennis shoes will work. For the more serious hiker, a hiking boot will offer you better support when traveling on uneven terrain.

Socks:

While many boots boast being waterproof, even a waterproof boot is still wet when completely submerged. That is why the socks you choose are almost as important as the shoes or boots you wear. A combination of cotton socks along with wool socks should help keep your feet warm in most situations. If your feet run the risk of being exposed and wet for long periods, use polypropylene socks as well.

Cell Phone and GPS:

If you are planning to hike, bring your cell phone and/or a GPS system. These will give you a way to call for help or find your way back from your wilderness hike.
